7:30-9:00 p.m. The Road to Romanticism
Room 110 Ingrid Clarfield, Westminster Choir College of Rider
University, Princeton, New Jersey
Nancy Tedford, presiding
In this workshop, Professor Clarfield explores the technical and musical elements that are essential in playing the music of the Romantic Period artistically. There is an abundance of music by contemporary composers that can prepare students beautifully for the stylistic issues they will encounter later in interpreting Romantic repertoire. Professor Clarfield will perform this preparatory repertoire and show how the same elements can be found in the Early Intermediate through Advanced compositions of Chopin and several other composers. Attention will focus on phrasing, rubato, pedaling, tone production, and voicing. Participants may wish to bring along the following music: Chopin: Nocturnes, Preludes, Waltzes, and Polonaises.

3:45-5:15 p.m. Romanticism in Debussy
Room 110 Dr. Ronald Williams, Reno
Doris Chase, presiding
Among the most interesting of composers are those whose music cut cross our carefully (and artificially) delineated stylistic periods. Debussy, a Romantic? His roots certainly lie in the music of Chopin and Schumann, and are solidly in the basic concepts and ideals of the Romantic tradition. Do his extensions of Romantic harmony and form qualify him as a new style, "Impressionistic"? Or perhaps our considering him a late Romantic will give us a more solid basis for performing and teaching his works. Dr. Williams, having just presented an all-Debussy recital, including Book I of the Preludes, will illustrate at the keyboard.

Room 110 Characterization
Ingrid Clarfield, Westminster Choir College of Rider
University, Princeton, New Jersey
Nancy Tedford, presiding
For this presentation, Professor Clarfield will focus on the necessity of incorporating artistic concepts during the early years of musical study. Developing a student’s "performance vocabulary" in the early stages will facilitate the integration of the technical and musical qualities in the more advanced literature. Performance choreography will also be addressed as it relates to musical intention and stylistic considerations. Elements essential to efficient practice and artistic performance of music from all periods will be discussed and demonstrated through examples from beginning, intermediate, and advanced repertoire. Professor Clarfield will also include examples from her new series with Dennis Alexander, Keys to Stylistic Mastery.
10:45-12:15 a.m. The Inner Game of Sight Reading
